The technique he invented forms the technological basis of motion pictures. He dressed a man (Marey worked on the male, never on the female, because he saw the male as the default human body) all in white and had him move in bright sunlight in front of a black background.

Marey operated on this body with an ordinary camera but with its lens left open.
Behind the lens he put a rapidly rotating metal disk, which had from one to ten slots cut into it at even intervals.
